The Bench Dog 40-001 is small benchtop router table that was designed with contractors in mind. It is supplied in a small package, to be assembled, and although one would think that for contractors, a unit that can quickly disassemble would be advantageous, the design is sturdy and not ideal for regular re-assembly. That doesn’t mean it isn’t for contractors though, with a number of other redeeming design features.
The overall table is made from solid birch plywood. The table surface is supported by a cabinet style enclosure, with solid sides and base. The base is mounted on four rubber feet which reduce slipping and also helps minimize vibration. Either side of the base has a recess which allows you to secure the router table between 2x4s if required. The enclosed design helps reduce dust and noise, and doubles as a storage area. At 15” high, it provides ample storage area and is enough space to support most routers.
The table weighs 40 pounds and is backed by a limited lifetime warranty. The front door is hinged for quick and easy access, and the back of the cabinet includes a hole for your router’s power cord to exit. Although requiring an initial assembly, clear instructions are provided and it can be completed within half an hour.
The table surface comprises a non-marring laminate top with a stress-skin construction which improves strength and ensures flatness. The table top is 24” wide by 16” deep and sports twin steel rails to support a router. The included router plate is predrilled while holes to accommodate most popular routers from leading brands.
The setup also includes a high-quality fence, Bench Dog’s own Pro-Fence. It has a one-piece aluminum frame which is heavy duty and its machined front and bottom surfaces provide flat and square performance. The table top has dual fence slots which allows the fence to be operated in either direction, making it easier to work with larger panels.
An adjustable, aluminum miter gauge and accessory track is located at the front of the table, which is able to fit all standard miter gauges, although none is included. Also on the fence is a 2.5” dust port which can attach to standard vacuum systems. It also includes an easily adjustable sub-fence and bit guard. The fence and table’s T-slots are able to accommodate the mounting of featherboards, stops and other router aids.
